[ARCHIVE] Boulder River Report 05/13/19
Like all the area freestones, flows on the Boulder have started to climb and run off color. It’s likely going to continue to climb throughout the week with warmer temperatures. The forks will kick in off color water, so flows will be clearer, but swift, up above Natural Bridge. Nymphing along the edges is probably the best bet with a rubber leg nymph pattern like a girdle bug or Pat’s rubber legs in black, brown or coffee color along with a beadhead trailer fly like a prince nymph, hare’s ear, batman or pheasant tail. Look for Caddis coming off, and if the fish are on them, try a darker body size 14 for the dry fly and a size 14-16 green or olive pupa or emerger. Also try basic buggers in black and olive or the Grinch for streamers. At some point soon, the river will likely start running extremely high and off color and will be best to just stay away from it.
