What To Expect At Fly Fishing Lessons In Montana

Each of our classes is taught by a professional fly fishing instructor. Matt Wilhelm is from the Yellowstone Fly Fishing School in Livingston and he is a Fly Fishers International certified Master Casting Instructor. His passion for fly fishing began at a very young age, on the banks of the Manistee River in Northern Michigan.

Matt is also a former National Education Coordinator for the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF) and his duties included planning and implementing education programs for fly fishing and aquatic programs on both a local and national level. In addition to his instruction courses, he is also the Director of Education for the Invasive Species Action Network. He helps educate others by developing educational materials and programs to help stop the spread of aquatic nuisance species and keeping our waters healthy. Matt is also the fly fishing coordinator for Montana’s Hooked on Fishing program where he provides fly fishing education that reaches close to 7,000 kids per year statewide.

Because of all of this, Matt was named Montana Fisheries Educator of the Year by the Montana Chapter of the American Fisheries Society. Plus, his success and unique education programs has led to Matt being featured on ESPN on two separate occasions. Bottom line, when you take a fly fishing course with Stillwater Anglers, you’re definitely in good hands.

Let’s discuss our courses, beginning with the introduction to fly fishing courses.

Introduction to Fly Fishing

Our intro class is what we like to call “soup to nuts.” It covers all of the essential skills necessary for any beginner fly fisherman. Some of the topics of this class include necessary equipment, knot tying, casting, basic entomology and fly selection, and even practical application on the water.

Our introduction class is a full-day class. It includes lunch and we provide all the gear and equipment if you don’t have any. The goal by the end of the day is that you have a basic grasp of the skills necessary to be self-sufficient out on the water. You’ll need to be prepared to be outdoors and on the river all day, so bring sunscreen and water. We also suggest wearing layers, just in case.

Our beginner classes are ideal for those looking for a basic overview or as a way to get your children involved in your favorite hobby. Read on as we describe some of our casting lessons, made for those who want to get the hang of fly fishing in general or even experienced casters looking for a tuneup or to brush up on a specific technique they are working on.

Fly Casting Tuneups

Our fly casting tuneups are a little bit shorter than our other fly fishing lessons in Montana, as each session is about two hours in length. We offer them in three separate sessions, beginning, intermediate, and advanced. These classes are designed for those who are just learning to cast, or those who have some experience but are looking to work out a few bugs in their mechanics.

Again, all of our guides and instructors have been fly fishing seriously for years and years, most of them since they were young children. While we provide instruction and tips on guided trips, we think that taking a tune-up class is a great opportunity to help you hone your skills before you actually go out on the water. These quick sessions are helpful for those who are just starting out or for those who just need a little more practice before going on their big guided adventure.

Private Casting Fly Fishing Lessons In Montana

Additionally to the two classes we listed above, we also offer private casting instruction offered by our experienced anglers. You can hire a guide for instruction for fly fishing beginners all the way to advanced instruction for seasoned anglers looking to improve some of their technical skills.

Give us a call today and we’ll discuss what you’re looking for and when we can set up a private lesson for you or your loved ones.
