Stillwater 5/18: Warmer weather has flows on the climb and is adding some color. The upper river is probably the best bet for clarity. So for wade fishing it’s usually best to go above the Rosebud confluence. Caddis have been coming off the last week or so, thick on occasion on the upper river. There are still a few March Browns as well. Try fishing a dry/dropper setup with a smaller stimulator, jack cabe, purple haze or march brown with a caddis pupa dropper nymph. Nymphing has also been productive with everything from a girdle bug or stonefly pattern, to san juan worms and small beadheads like a red copper john, optic nerve, batman, North Fork Special, Lil’ Spanker or midge patterns taking fish. In higher, off color water fish bigger rubberleg patterns or the san juan worm. Streamer fishermen have had success as well, with the Grinch always the #1 pattern. In off color water try a darker body color streamer for contrast. It’s likely runoff is finally here to stay.
